Liberty Mutual launched ResponsibleSports.com last fall in partnership with Positive Coaching Alliance, USA Youth Football and US Youth Soccer.  The online resource provides parents and coaches with advice, toolkits and best practices on coaching and mentoring today’s youth, so they can maximize the positive role they play in young athletes’ lives.

Crockett was among thousands of coaches nationwide nominated online by parents, peers and organizations at Responsible Sports September 17 and December 7, 2007.  Winning coaches were selected by a committee of representatives from Positive Coaching Alliance, USA Football, US Youth Soccer and Liberty Mutual.

Below is an excerpt from Coach Crockett’s winning nomination submitted by the mother of one of his players:

“Coach Warren has a passion for football unparalleled to any other coach I have seen. The excitement in his eyes when a play is completed is reflected in all of his kids. He heads up a coaching staff of six volunteers and considers all 39 players on his roster as his own. I think that the most important thing about Coach Warren is the fact that he teaches kids what it means to be a team player both on and off of the field. He has organized nights with local high school football games and parties at Laser Tag in order to instill a sense of responsibility and camaraderie among all of his players. This has played a positive role in the sportsmanship and friendship developed among this group of kids. Also, he strives to have a winning season on the scoreboard while at the same time stressing that the winning doesn't only take place on the field. It is something that carries on when they get home, to school, etc. For all of these reasons, I am HONORED to have Coach Warren lead my son onto the football field.”

Coach Crockett spent a few minutes with usafootball.com to reflect on his award.

What does being a Responsible Coach mean to you?

Crockett: “Being a Responsible Coach means everything to me. I’ve always to tried to lead by example instill work ethic & discipline into each young person I’m able to come in contact with regardless of ability. Youth Sports is my passion and reaching the young people through these methods is truly a blessing.”

What types of things do you teach your players that will help them not only be better players but better people off the field?

Crockett: “I try to teach them to never settle for anything but their best! – Lot’s of coaches say you have to teach kids to win and lose but that’s not so with me. I don’t ever want my kids to except losing as an option in nothing including life! You must give it all to get it all!”

Why did you want to become a member of USA football? And what are some of the benefits you are seeing as a member?

Crockett:USA football has been a great resource for my development as a coach – I’ve been able to make contacts that would not have been possible without USA Football.”
